distance

The space between two points. Distance is normally measured using centimetres, metres, and kilometres.

Straight-line distances on a map can be easily measured with a ruler or straight edge. Simply convert the ruler measurement to distance, using the scale provided on the map. Twisting routes can be measured with a length of string, which is then straightened and measured in the normal way. For an object travelling at a constant speed the distance travelled can be calculated using the equation:

distance = speed × time.
