women's theatre

Movement promoting theatrical production by women about women's lives. It was pioneered by the It's All Right To Be A Woman theatre company in the USA in 1970 with the Women's Project, founded in 1978 in New York, for the production of scripts by women. In Britain, it made up a major part of the alternative theatre movement of the 1970s, with the Women's Theatre Group founded in 1973, Monstrous Regiment in 1975, and Spare Tyre in 1979.
