The border collie, the most popular breed of sheepdog in the UK, has been used as a working dog for more than two hundred years. The dog's mild nature, its intelligence and agility, as well as the innate instinct it has for gathering sheep into a flock, make it ideally suited to working with these animals.

Any of several breeds of dog, bred originally for herding sheep. The dog now most commonly used by shepherds and farmers in Britain to tend sheep is the border collie. Non-pedigree dogs of the border collie type, though more variable in size and colour, are referred to as working sheepdogs. Other recognized British breeds are the Old English and Shetland sheepdogs. Many countries have their own breeds of sheepdog, such as the Belgian sheepdog, Australian kelpie, and Hungarian puli.
