yodel

Elaborate form of song in Switzerland, Tyrol, and Styria, usually sung by men in falsetto, with rapid changes to chest voice (the lower register of the human voice). The song is very free in rhythm and metre and uses, as a rule, the restricted scale of the natural harmonics of instruments like the alphorn. The yodel is thus very probably derived or copied from the ranz des vaches.
