zero-sum game

Situation in which one party can benefit only at the expense of another. When one negotiator wins, the other must lose. For instance, this would be the case where two companies wished to acquire the same target, or if both companies wanted the majority of a finite resource. This approach, often adopted as an aggressive strategy in negotiations, is also referred to as a win-lose approach.
